Shark and Shoal Guesthouse is ideally situated for access to several outdoor activites ranging from decadently relaxing beach lounging to ultra active kayak fishing.  Contact us for Umkomaas accommodation.  Remember our town is famous for being the main gateway to the world famous Aliwal Shoal diving site which is well known for its shark diving experiences.  Being on the coast all the outdoor activities are weather dependent but the south coast offers a beautiful climate.  Our most beautiful months tend to be April, May and June but the rest of the year is still very pleasant.  Remember, February tends to be very hot and humid for those who like to sweat those kilos off. Aliwal Shoal diving is what Umkomaas is best known for and in particular scuba diving with sharks.

Kayak Fishing

Mountain Biking

Off road trails through the plantations and cane fields make this activity very attractive. One of South Africa’s most famous mountain bike races, the Sani2C, has its last day of racing down the Umkomass valley, snaking down some of the best single track South Africa has to offer. Two farms in the area have integrated mtb tracks the cater for the beginner up to techinal tracks for the advanced.

Scuba Diving

Aliwal Shoal is a world renowned dive site and particularly well known for its shark diving. These beautiful creatures abound on the Shoal. Local dive centres cater for all class of diver from novice to master. . Local dive charters offer the best chance in the world to see a Tiger shark on Scuba in this area. Shark cage diving is also available.  Scuba diving with sharks is and unforgettable experience.


There are five beautiful sea view golf courses within a 30 km radius from the guest house. There are also some amazing courses in Durban, 60 km north, as well as many courses to the south of Umkomaas, including the renowned Wild Coast sun, one of South Africa’s top courses.


The Pennington area is well know for its unusually large variety of bird species and is a popular destination for bird watchers. Common sightings from our guest house include, Pelicans, Fish Eagles, Bush lourie, a variety of Kingfishers, sunbirds and many more. A river paddle is also a great way to sight some new species, see River paddle.

River Paddling

Several rivers enter the sea around Umkomaas, most seasonally. They are ideal for a casual paddle to take in the scenary, do some bird watching, or try to catch some of the fish that populate these beautiful waters. We can organize a picnic upstream or just drop you off an leave you to explore.
