Diving in Umkomaas
So what can you do when visiting Umkomaas? Well first and foremost our little town is probably best known as the recreational scuba diving Mecca on the South Coast of KZN. With Aliwal Shoal on our doorstep, divers from all over the world visit this pristine and exquisite underwater world. Situated about 5 kilometers offshore Aliwal Shoal lies within a marine protected area and is host to a variety of sea life.
Scuba divers will enjoy exploring the Shoal and will encounter the famous Ragged Tooth Sharks or “Raggies” between July and November when the sharks congregate to mate. Besides the diverse fish species recreational divers will be able to explore the Norwegian Bulk Carrier, the MV Produce which sank in 1974 and also remnants of the SS Nebo which sank in 1884.
There are a number of well equipped and experienced Dive Charters to take you out on an adventure of a lifetime including Shark Cage diving for the ultimate adrenaline rush.
